“The problem with our area is that some of the gardens are too big or steep for people to manage themselves. The lads from WISEworks have made a real difference. Working together we’ve now got loads of ideas of how we can further improve our estate and make it a place where more people will want to come and live”.

THE UCAN CENTRE TONGE MOOR
The Manager of the UCAN Centre, Tony Cottam gave WISEworks the task of clearing the site to the side of the old library at Tonge Moor Bolton. The site had been tipped on with rubble, become a haven for weeds and was very uneven.

Our remit was to
- remove all of the rubble and soil
- construct 4 raised beds using railway sleepers
- a paved path with disabled access
- erect ornate steel fencing and gates

On completion Tony offered the raised beds to the community and the offer was taken up by local schools. The schools who are involved are Castle Hill, Moorgate and Tonge Primary. Youth Inclusive Panel (YIP) also took up opportunities provided by the new facility. Their aim is to interesting and socially beneficial activity for vulnerable young people. Moorgate School created a design in their raised beds using flowers and concentric circles formed using coloured gravels.
Tony said “the project has been very successful". He is looking forward to expanding the range of community engagement activity from the UCAN Centre with other sites which we will improve for the benefit of local people.
