Welcome to learnWISE
Giving the best possible start in life to young families is vital. The help, support, community development and learning programmes designed and delivered by learnWISE over the past decade have led to improved outcomes for children, young people and their parents and carers in terms of learning attainment and skills development, social interaction and family cohesion.
From Sure Start Children’s Centres we have delivered a wide range of family learning activities that are engaging, fun and educational. Our ‘first step’ courses range from short tasters and open day events - through to longer programmes that can lead to nationally recognised qualifications.
Under the LSC’s Neighbourhood Learning Programme we have provided ‘style and beauty’ and ‘dress for success’ courses linked to motivational training activities. These have proven to be highly successful in engaging adults who had not participated in learning since their school days!
With the support of Bolton Council we have developed a programme of activity and support designed especially to meet the needs of fathers and their children. Through our ‘Dads, Lads and Lasses’ project we have established a vibrant social network for dads and their children across the borough.
Most sessions last about 1½ hours and are available during weekdays and some evenings and weekends.
Up to 600 participants have engaged with learnWISE programmes each week. Evidence gathered from our work to date demonstrates that our various learnWISEprogrammes achieve a broad range of outcomes including :
- Improved social interaction,
- Improved information, understanding of and access to other services,
- Increased confidence and motivation,
- Peer parenting support and positive role modeling,
- Improved educational, social and emotional development of children and young people,
- Improved levels of health and fitness, and
- Improved skills for life and for work.
